It’s hard to believe that Cody Wood only picked up a film camera for the first time less than two years ago.

Now an ever-present figure in Brisbane’s budding young film community, his work behind the lens is careful, considered and technically excellent.

Cody’s photography explores his obsession with light, reflections, colour and reality, weaving imagery that explores his relationship with the world, people, his possessions and himself.

In his own words…

“I’ve been thinking a lot about why I prefer to look at photos taken on my film camera over other cameras, and I’ve found that the emotional attachment that comes with the process of film photography plays a huge part.

When shooting film, each press of the shutter is a considered act full of choices both technical and psychological, giving every photo more value. This extra value has made me more aware of what it is that I like to photograph. I like to photograph humanity, both physically and in its absence.

The pattern of open windows on the high rise building is a remnant of human activity, as are the coins at the bottom of the lake. The pot plant in the corner of my room and my messy bathroom sink are reminders of a period of my life, and an insight into what it was like to be me in those moments.

My photos are my way of engaging with the world, and I hope that people engage with them in the same considered way that I make them.”
