Southside marks the third East Asian restaurant concept we’ve worked with FANDA Hospitality on, following Little Valley and Rick Shores.

Our identity for Southside was largely inspired by the clean visual design of metropolitan transit systems, owing to the restaurant’s location overlooking the imposing rail bridges of South Brisbane.

Other key points of reference were the brutalist design of the nearby Queensland Museum and Performing Arts Centre, as well as FANDA’s vision of creating ‘a ruined temple’ experience for diners, beginning with the architecture of the Fish Lane Town Square precinct (expertly designed by Richards and Spence) and flowing on into the restaurant’s interiors helmed by Tonic Projects and our friends at Clui Design.

The resulting identity blends form and structure with aeon and abandon to create something wholly retrofuturistic.

It’s as though Southside is something new and shiny to behold, yet aged, overgrown and forgotten all at the same time.
